Static FBML
Facebook is a popular social networking medium as well as an excellent platform for businesses to brand themselves. However, the traditional Facebook page is somewhat bland and can look just like every other business fan page. This is where the application static FBML enters and helps the business page stand out from competitors by introducing customization features formerly impossible for Facebook users.
Static FBML is short for Facebook markup language and is a feature which allows Facebook pages to display photos hosted on another server, Youtube videos or special backgrounds and customize their pages to suit their personality and message.
The application is not enabled by default on Facebook pages but must instead be enabled just like any of the other available applications. Using FBML, a business can customize a tab and then make it the default landing page where visitors see their company message first.
Without this markup language it might be impossible to put an image on the landing page which was clickable and lead to another site. However simply by using this code you can insert a jpeg hosted on your own site, and link it to an outside destination. This is ideal for Facebook users whose main site and information is hosted elsewhere.
Static FBML is simply an application and option on Facebook which permits the user to add static html or CSS to Facebook and will display just as it would on a normal webpage. Unlike HTML editors the raw code without extra characters must be input into the box. Unlike the standard HTML page there is no need to add headers, meta-tags or any extra characters.
There are some things to keep in mind when using this handy application to customize a social network page such as Facebook. Photos and movies can’t be over 560 pixels in order to fit within the allotted section on the tab. This should be no problem with most jpegs and videos. Javascript will not run from the markup box either.
Image names should be a single name with no spaces. If a jpeg name is two words, a hyphen should be used to avoid problems in display. While an image has no height limitations the larger a photo is, the longer it takes to load and scrolling is not user friendly.
Simple HTML will usually work well in the Static FBML markup box. It is important when pasting code in the box to close the tags being used and allow no extra spaces. This markup language for Facebook is not much harder than regular HTML but it does require clean code without the extra characters WYSIWYG editors might insert.
Static Facebook markup language has made fan pages on Facebook a lot more configurable for the average business owner. Anyone who wants a unique look to their Facebook pages can use this simple application and add custom backgrounds, images, videos from outside sources and even more.

It doesn’t work for new accounts
I’d really like to put Static FBML to my fanpage, but I cannot find it in the Application List. It doesn’t even show “Browse more applications”. What should I do?
